Stats Guide
Reference for every default stat shown on Stat_Line's pitching, batting, catching and dashboard pages — not the school-specific custom stats some programs add on top, which are defined by that school's own uploaded report script and can use different formulas than what's documented here.
Pitching Report
Both tables below are built fresh from the raw pitch-by-pitch data for whatever games and pitcher you select — nothing here is pre-aggregated. The strike zone used throughout is a fixed rulebook box: ±0.83 ft from the middle of the plate, and 1.5–3.5 ft off the ground.
Pitch-Type Table
One row per pitch type the pitcher threw, aggregated across every selected game.
- Thrown
- Share of this pitcher's total pitches that were this type. pitches of this type / all pitches thrown
- Low / Vel. / High
- Minimum, average and maximum release speed for this pitch type.
- IVB / HB
- Average induced vertical break and horizontal break.
- Spin
- Average spin rate.
- VAA / HAA
- Average vertical and horizontal approach angle at the plate.
- RelH / RelS
- Average release height and release side.
- Ext.
- Average extension.
- Axis
- Average spin-axis direction, shown as a clock face (e.g. "12:30").
- Zone
- Share of this pitch type that landed inside the strike zone box. pitches in the zone / pitches of this type A pitch with no tracked location counts toward the total but not the in-zone count, so a game with missing PlateLoc data will read slightly lower than actual.
- Chase
- How often this pitch type got a swing, expressed as a share of every pitch of that type — not just the ones outside the zone. (swung at, fouled off, put in play, or HBP) AND outside the zone, / pitches of this type
- CSW
- Called Strikes + Swinging Strikes, the standard whiff-plus-called-strike effectiveness rate. (called strikes + swinging strikes) / pitches of this type
- Damage
- Of this pitch type's balls in play, the share hit hard on a line. (exit velo ≥ 90 mph AND launch angle 10°–35°) / balls in play of this type
Pitch Usage (LHH / RHH)
Same pitch types, broken out by count situation, one table for left-handed batters and one for right-handed.
- Count
- Number of pitches of this type thrown to this batter side.
- Strike
- Share of this pitch type that was a called strike, swinging strike, or foul. strikes of this type / count
- 0-0
- Of every pitch thrown as the first pitch of a plate appearance, the share that was this type. this type's first-pitch count / all first-pitch count
- Hitter's
- Of every pitch thrown in a hitter-favorable count (more balls than strikes), the share that was this type.
- Pitcher's
- Same, for pitcher-favorable counts (more strikes than balls).
- 2k
- Of every pitch thrown with two strikes, the share that was this type.
- Whiff
- Swing-and-miss rate on swings at this pitch type — the standard whiff definition, over swings rather than over every pitch (compare to the Pitching Report's Chase, which is intentionally over every pitch of that type). swinging strikes of this type / swings at this type
Batting Report
A plate appearance is counted when it ends in a walk, strikeout, hit-by-pitch, or ball in play — not one per pitch seen.
Summary / Slash Line
- PA / AB
- Plate appearances, and at-bats (PA minus walks, hit-by-pitches and sacrifices).
- AVG
- hits / AB
- OBP
- (hits + walks + HBP) / (AB + walks + HBP + sacrifices)
- SLG
- total bases / AB, where a single/double/triple/home run counts 1/2/3/4 bases.
- OPS
- OBP + SLG
- BB% / K%
- Walks or strikeouts as a share of plate appearances.
- Avg EV / Max EV
- Average and maximum exit velocity on balls in play.
- Hard-Hit%
- Share of balls in play (with a tracked exit velocity) hit 95+ mph.
- Avg LA
- Average launch angle on balls in play.
Plate Discipline
One row per pitch type the hitter saw.
- Seen / Usage
- Pitches of this type seen, and that count's share of every pitch seen.
- Zone
- Share of this pitch type (with a tracked location) that was in the strike zone. in-zone / located pitches of this type Unlike the Pitching Report's Zone stat, an untracked pitch is excluded from both the top and bottom of this fraction rather than just the top.
- Swing
- Share of this pitch type the hitter swung at (whiff, foul, or ball in play).
- Whiff
- Swing-and-miss rate on swings at this pitch type. whiffs / swings
- Chase
- Of this pitch type's located pitches outside the zone, the share swung at. swings outside the zone / located pitches outside the zone
- Contact
- Of the swings taken at this pitch type, the share that weren't a whiff.
Batted Ball Profile
Every ball in play, bucketed by launch angle: Ground ≤ 10°, Line 10°–25°, Fly 25°–50°, Pop above 50°.
- Count / Rate
- Balls in play in this bucket, and that count's share of all balls in play.
- Avg EV / Max EV
- Average and maximum exit velocity within the bucket.
- Avg LA
- Average launch angle within the bucket.
- Avg Dist
- Average batted-ball distance within the bucket.
Catching Report
Framing is graded only on taken pitches (called a ball or a strike — swings aren't framed), against a model of how likely each pitch's exact location was to be called a strike in the first place.
Framing (SLAA / SL+)
- Strike probability
- A pitch's modeled chance of being called a strike, based purely on its distance from the rulebook zone edge: 50% exactly on the edge, rising toward 100% at the center of the zone, falling toward 0% further outside it. The same model every school starts with — it isn't learned from that school's own pitch history.
- Framing Value
- Per taken pitch: credit for stealing an unlikely strike, a debit for losing a likely one, zero when the call matched a coin-flip-or-better expectation. called strike, prob < 50%: +(50% − prob) called ball, prob > 50%: −(prob − 50%) otherwise: 0
- Framing Value (per game)
- Sum of every taken pitch's framing value that game — the catching equivalent of SLAA (Strikes-Looking-Above-Average).
- Framing Rate
- Stolen strikes minus lost strikes, scaled to a rate per 100 taken pitches (SL+). (stolen − lost) / taken pitches × 100
- Correct / Stolen / Lost
- Taken-pitch counts where the actual call matched the model's expectation, beat it (stole a strike), or missed it (lost a strike).
Dashboard — Team Overview
Situational splits for lead-off batters (the first batter of an inning) and two-out at-bats, computed per outing at upload time and summed across every outing on file for the season.
- LO OBP
- How often the lead-off batter reached base (walk, HBP, hit, or error), per lead-off inning. lead-off reaches / lead-off innings
- LO BB%
- Lead-off walks, per lead-off inning.
- 2-Out Eff%
- How often a two-out at-bat ended without the batter reaching base — the pitcher's "finish the inning" rate. (2-out at-bats − 2-out reaches) / 2-out at-bats
- 2-Out BB%
- Walks issued with two outs, per two-out at-bat.
